Diabetic Neuropathy – Nerve Damage in Diabetes

Diabetic neuropathy is a common complication of long-standing diabetes, caused by persistently high blood sugar levels that damage the nerves throughout the body. The condition most often affects the legs and feet, but it can also involve the nerves controlling the digestive system, urinary tract, and sexual function.

  • Common Symptoms
  • Numbness or tingling in the feet or hands
  • Burning or stabbing pain, especially at night
  • Increased sensitivity to touch
  • Muscle weakness or difficulty walking
  • Reduced reflexes and loss of sensation
  • Problems with digestion and
  • sexual function (erectile dysfunction)

At Ashtamgam Ayurveda Chikitsalayam & Vidyapeedham, our integrated approach combines Ayurveda, Modern Medicine, Yoga, and Ayurvedic Dietetics to slow nerve damage, relieve symptoms, and promote natural nerve regeneration — helping patients regain comfort, confidence, and control over their health.

Diabetic Nephropathy

Diabetic nephropathy, also known as diabetic kidney disease, is the chronic loss of kidney function occurring in those with diabetes mellitus. Diabetic nephropathy is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease, and end-stage renal disease globally.

Symptoms:
Diabetic nephropathy often has no symptoms in the early stages. The earliest warning sign is sustained microalbuminuria, which can be detected through regular urine tests. As kidney function declines, symptoms may include:
Swelling: In the face, hands, feet, or ankles
Blood pressure: High blood pressure that’s harder to control
Urine: Foamy or bubbly urine

Diabetic Foot Ulcer

A non-healing diabetic foot ulcer occurs when a diabetic patient’s foot wound doesn’t heal due to poor blood circulation, nerve damage, and inflammation, and it can lead to serious complications, including amputation. Treatment focuses on managing blood sugar, improving circulation, offloading pressure on the wound, wound debridement, advanced dressings, and potentially therapies like negative-pressure wound therapy or hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a common condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones, causing the body’s metabolism to slow down. Though it can affect anyone at any age, it is most common in women and people over 60. While it can develop slowly and have mild symptoms, untreated hypothyroidism can become life-threatening.

Hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid, is a medical condition where the thyroid gland produces and releases excessive amounts of thyroid hormone. This excess hormone speeds up your body’s metabolism and other functions, which can cause a wide range of symptoms. The condition is treatable, and symptoms can often be managed effectively.

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system mistakenly attacks and damages the thyroid gland. This chronic inflammation, also called Hashimoto’s disease or chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, eventually leads to hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid.

Symptoms
The disease often progresses slowly over many years, and many people initially have no symptoms. As the thyroid becomes more damaged and hormone levels drop, symptoms of hypothyroidism may appear and include:
* Goiter: The thyroid may become enlarged, creating a goiter that can cause the neck to appear swollen or feel full.
* Fatigue: Persistent tiredness and lethargy are common.
* Weight gain: Mild, unexplained weight gain can occur.
* Cold sensitivity: Feeling intolerant of cold temperatures.
* Skin and hair changes: Dry skin and dry, thinning hair are frequently reported.
* Musculoskeletal pain: Aches in the joints and muscles.
* Constipation: Bowel movements may become irregular.
* Menstrual changes: Women may experience heavy or irregular periods.
* Mental health issues: This can include depression and difficulty concentrating, also known as “brain fog”.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is an eye disease caused by damage to the retina’s blood vessels due to high blood sugar levels over time. It is a leading cause of blindness in working-age adults.

Symptoms
In the early stages, diabetic retinopathy often has no symptoms. Vision can seem normal even as damage occurs. As the condition progresses, symptoms may include:
* Blurry or distorted vision
* Seeing spots or dark, floating strings (floaters)
* Dark or empty areas in the field of vision
* Trouble seeing at night
* Flashes of light
