  • Anal or rectal stricture (narrowing that may occur from scarring, severe inflammation or cancer)
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Diarrhea (causing anal irritation)
  • Fecal impaction (a mass of hardened stool in the rectum due to chronic constipation)
  • Genital warts
  • Levator ani syndrome (spasm in the muscles that surround the anus)
  • Perianal abscess (pus in the deep tissue around the anus)
  • Perianal hematoma (a collection of blood in the perianal tissue caused by a ruptured vein, sometimes called an external hemorrhoid)
  • Proctalgia fugax (fleeting pain due to rectal muscle spasm)
  • Proctitis (inflammation of the lining of the rectum)
  • Solitary rectal ulcer syndrome (ulcer of the rectum)

  • Thrombosed hemorrhoid (blood clot in a hemorrhoid)
  • Trauma
  • Ulcerative colitis (a type of inflammatory bowel disease)
  • Ulcerative proctitis (a type of inflammatory bowel disease)

Types of anal pain-

General classification of anal pain:

  • Acute Anal Pain:

Often caused by conditions like anal fissures, hemorrhoids, or anal abscesses.

Typically sudden in onset and may be associated with trauma or injury.

  • Chronic Anal Pain:

Lasting for an extended period, usually more than 3 months.

Conditions like chronic anal fissures, proctalgia fugax, levator ani syndrome, or pudendal neuralgia may cause chronic anal pain.

  • Inflammatory Causes:

Conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis) can lead to anal pain due to inflammation in the anal area.

  • Infectious Causes:

Anal pain can result from infections such as anal herpes, anal warts (caused by HPV), or sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

  • Traumatic Causes:

Trauma to the anal area from childbirth, anal intercourse, or accidents can lead to anal pain.

  • Neurological Causes:

Conditions affecting the nerves supplying the anal region, like neuropathies or nerve entrapment syndromes, can cause anal pain.

  • Neoplastic Causes:

Anal pain may be a symptom of anal cancer or other malignancies affecting the anal region.

  • Functional Causes:

Conditions like constipation, diarrhea, or pelvic floor dysfunction can cause anal pain due to straining during bowel movements or abnormal muscle function.

  • Psychogenic Causes:

Psychological factors like anxiety, stress, or somatization disorders can manifest as anal pain.
