Knee pain

Pain in or around the knee may indicate a condition affecting the knee joint itself or the soft tissue around the knee. It is a common complaint seen in people of all ages.

Causes

Knee pain can have causes that aren’t due to underlying disease. Examples include heavy physical activity, lack of use, injuries such as sprains or strains, sitting in a constrained area, or sitting on the knees for a prolonged period.

Injuries

  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury
  • Meniscus tear
  • Fractures
  • Knee bursitis
  • Patellar tendonitis

Mechanical problems

  • Loose body
  • Iliotibial band syndrome
  • Dislocated kneecap
  • Hip or foot pain

Arthritic changes

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Gout
  • Septic arthritis

SYMPTOMS

  • Swelling and stiffness
  • Redness and warmth to the touch
  • Weakness or instability
  • Popping or crunching noises
  • Inability to fully straighten the knee

RISK FACTORS

  • Excess weight
  • Lack of muscle strength or flexibility
  • Certain sports and occupations
  • Previous injury

Complications

Not all knee pain is serious. But some knee injuries and medical conditions, such as osteoarthritis, can lead to increasing pain, joint damage, and disability if left untreated. And having a knee injury — even a minor one — makes it more likely that you’ll have similar injuries in the future.

PREVENTION

  • Weight management
  • Maintain physical fitness
  • Practice proper form in sports and other activities
  • Stay strong and flexible

TREATMENT IN AYURVEDA

  • Upanaham (poultice application)
  • Janudhara (specific Ayurvedic therapy for the knee)
  • Janu basti (knee joint therapy using a pool of medicated oil)
