‘SOOTHIKAMRITAM’ is a joint venture of Prasooti-Kaumarabhritya- Swasthavritta departments in Ashtamgam Ayurveda Chikitsalayam and Vidyapeedham. It covers core care that should be offered to the mother and baby during the first six weeks after the childbirth. The guidelines address an individualised care in accordance with body constitution of mother, nature of delivery, amount of blood loss, breast feeding issues etc. Ashtamgam adopts a unique ayurvedic puerperial care that uses a focused approach through specific dietetics, several medicinal formulations, oil massage, medicated bathe etc. All these measures assist in successful breast feeding, promoting the health of the mother and baby and aids in replenishing strength of the body. The quality of postnatal care provided to women in the first few days and weeks after delivery can have a significant impact on their experience of the transition to parenthood and helps to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality to an extent.


The development of preconception care that promotes health and prevents disease in women of reproductive age is a part of nationwide effort to improve birth outcomes.
